Threads Of Treasure
How to make, mend and find meaning through thread
Sara Barnes

Embroidery and stitch can often be viewed as the practical, done for a reason, especially in by-gone times. However what if a stitch was for more than a stitch’s sake? For example, a stitch in time, saves nine….what about altering that well turned phrase to ‘a stitch in time, saves a mind?
No, this book has not been designed as any therapeutic guide in the main, yet its overall meaning can have that very affect on us personally. How to use this book? Page 12 - Brnes instructs us to let go of our phones and be guided by paper and thread for a while. We live on screen time - disengagement can be healthy.
The cover is hardback and reminds me of the inside part of an old fairy tale story - you know the days when children’s books used to have a light paper cover with the hard back book held inside? So, first up - what does this book contain? Within, you will find advice from fourteen modern day artists who have been brought in by the author here, to all comply to the subject matter - what I note is that all are different - no I will be honest, nothing ground breaking here - but do we need groundbreaking? I do not think so.
Maybe as a lone artist you lack that connection of souls - the gather and gander of a group who can utter such like minded longings of stitchery together. Books like this one can be that company you need, even if it is temporary. The voices pervade here, with no pushing to us to create, we are simply offered ideas, visuals to tempt and make us ladder our own thoughts for our own personal creativity.
I sound here like I am giving a very distant reote review…really though I see this book as more about a quality we are encouraged to take on - that of gratitude, for what we have and what we can create - we have a choice, to take note and treasure what we have, or ungreatfully not notice what is going on around us.
Yes, we will discover pages with many seen before things, like embroidery hoops with yes.,…embroidery. But we will also come across leaves, which too have embroidered hearts.
In the end, it is not about creating the groundbreaking, it is about turning in, to what soothes us, lights us….what do we treasure?
Think.
