Design Then Quilt: A Dynamic Guide to Creating Stunning Modern Quilts
Irene Roderick
Schiffer Craft
Dynamic. That is the word that stood out to me in this most recent tile, by Irene Roderick. It suggests fresh, new, enthusiastic, full of life. How does this relate to making quilts? It is a traditional craft, one which could have been done by Prairie women and modern artist alike. However it depends on the style. It is, as I seem an exciting genre. Why? Because you simply do not know where to stop with it, There is so final finished product. Well, there is, maybe in your own eyes or that of the beholders. However it could always - be - more. I see that as a constant thread both in the written and the visual of Rodericks work. Her previous title published by another publisher, again focused on the arty side of quilting. Roderick, an artist all her life, began quilting later, but as first and foremost an artist myself, I see how your background can influence your now foreground, as it were. In her case, she has brought the art to the quilt.
The focus in this title is yes by the titles word - Design. How to think about design, how to plan, what methods, inspiration, exercises to strengthen skills…..
The book is for mixed abilities, but no one is talked down to nor talked up to - not too high minded to understand. She has the ability to write with clarity, because she knows it - thus she can explain it well.
It is a busy minded book - full of bright pictures. It is not too much, but please go slowly, follow along. If you get confused, spin back a few pages and then re-read.
The main thing about this book, is that it is designed, yes designed for those who want to make their own versions, you won’t be making any carbon copies here.
