10 SWEET & SIMPLE FRIENDS TO CROCHET & APPLIQUÉ
Colleen Lynch
Flat-Lay Crochet in a Day
Better Day Books
What’s your Crochet memory? Most of us will have had one. As a child, my grandmother's closest friend was a keen house decorator - of the crochet kind. Filled with cushions, waistcoats, tea cosy, those old fashioned armchair protectors…oh and the ahem toilet seat cover (warm eh). Then there was my own mother. I am still awaiting my blanket…..one day…..
What’s the similar narrative here? This art form is generally driven to warm feelings, familial or friendship based. I have tried it myself…..but maybe this is the book which will push me to really have a go.
What’s it about?
Personally, I need to be really captured by the theme as well as the method when I am learning something new. Looking at yes, beautiful crochet squares just has never cut it for me. But feed me it in doll form….I now see a purpose!
This book contains ten projects which can be added to other items - for example, a flat lay (the dolls are all seemly set to be left not stuffed into a 3D doll shape) can be sewn onto a cushion, bag, or even a canvas.
How is it written?
It has a friendly vibe, with enthusiastic comments from Lynch. However this does not take away from the teaching and clarity of the progressive steps and education value.
Bullet points are used for each project, with simple ‘need’ lists.
What level is it written for?
Anyone with a love of the cute, the dolly…..the thirst to understand the technique will make you learn it!
What are the projects designed for in the end?
I am imagining that if you are in your early 20s, 30s or 40s then it will be for friends, you, or a child. If you are a little later in days, then it could be a friend’s child, grandchild…..it has a place for everyone who wants so smile and feel its pervading warmth.
