Felt Craft Fun: 16 Adorable Kawaii-Style Projects to Stitch, Share, and Love All Year Long

Jessica (Jess) DeVos

Better Day Books

With a cute look right from the cover, we kind of know what we are going to get with this one. Yet is that a bad thing?

The publisher

Better Day Books, they leave you feeling just that. Better, more resilient and just able to cope. It might not be a lasting feeling, but you will never get a nightmare that is for sure. I love the uplifted spirit in human kind, the way they expect good, and maybe just will get it. Ideal for those who struggle with emotional dare I say ‘issues’, but really a part of being human - we will all have our day when even as adults, we need a ‘better day’. So why not spike a better day to happen by just reading something which will lift you? I find them an ideal companion as a publisher, as they do not go into anything about mental health, they just act as a support, in a candy cover.

Jess….

Jessica or Jess, is a mixed media artist who has her own business as well as her writing this book. Her business involves selling kits etc and ties in beautifully with the book actually. Take a look at her website here.

She gives a warm introduction of herself on her website, where we read: ‘Hey hi hello there!

I’m Jess. I’m a wife, mama, and cozy fantasy enthusiast living in rural Iowa. I’ve been a professional maker for the last 9 years. I got my start making cloth toys and quiet books, but quickly discovered that embroidery is something that I not only love, but do well.’

She uses social media well and has a gallery of her work on her website too, so we can gain a view of her work style before we buy her book.

What audience is this book great for?

Beginners. Imagine starting out, at that place where you want to try but are scared to start? This book is ideas as the actual subject matter is so easy to follow. Felt was where actually I began my mixed media art career, so I have a soft spot for this medium. This book could also be worked along with children who wish to try stitching out for the first time.

The book has a ‘level’ guide, so from 1-3, easy to hard. So Try a one and work upwards. The projects might inspire you to ‘get better’; you might so want to create a 3 that you practice to get there.

What kind of projects will I learn?

Everything with a smile - literally. Even the burger has one in this book! You will learn some seasonal, some themed, some fairytale, some cute critters….

The projects have been divided into four seasons, however some apply to any time of year - I will always need a flower in my life, sure you will too.

Will I learn anything else apart from the projects?

Yes, the templates are included at the back and lots of stitch carrying along, you won’t get lost. Not a case of here is the project run with it. No, Jess becomes stitch mamma to us all. There is even guidance on ‘working with kiddos’ (page 49)

What is Kawaii? It’s Cuteness, playful, founded in Japan - just so the book’s title makes sense!

Oh and the projects are all very hoop based, so an ideal way to make your work small, portable and no excuse worthy!
