No matter where we come from, what place we call our birth land pr the place which ended up as home, we call want to have our place in this world. The Embroidery of Mexico dwells in that league, taking on now just a technique, but a culture, a true representation of a place.
Geography x Embroidery
There is a lot of culture and land based projects enclosed, but at no time did I feel I did not connect with them, just because I had never been to the place. I viewed it like a travel brochure, or when we read a magazine article about another country. It doesn’t mean we will ever get there, but people are people, we will always find something we identify with or which resonates with us.
The foreward, written by a separate Art Researcher, gives a beautiful testimony to the author. It is worth reading before you go into the contents; please do not skip it. The author has done her homework, not simply visiting one place in Mexico, but the smaller places, the ones maybe less known or talked about. This allows for a real account, not just a tourist impression.
Who will enjoy this book?
Those who want to travel in either mind or reality, as this book serves as both an educational guide about Mexico and also a real artists who love embroidery book. If you have less interest and maybe see Embroidery as a hobby, you might be less taken by this book. I feel it is immersive and it has to be allowed in, time spent over - it deserves this type of view. Those studying culture or history, especially when art related may enjoy this book too.
Basic contents description
Materials are all visually listed, mainly known ones. Although when you get to ‘Threads’, your eyes may look again…that’s all I will tell you. (Page 13)
Support to do the basics which are standard for most Embroidery books, such as transferring designs onto fabric.
Stitches, motifs and pattern building are all seen, with guidance on each, however this is not your typical project book - it is more self prescribed than that.
Final thoughts
Having discussed this book with others who have also had a chance to read its content, I found that it transcended ins prescribed genre. It has been loved by those who are not even embroidery aware - yet they took to heart the journey we find within - a place we may never experience in real time, yet in this book with its text descriptions of Mexico and especially the more niche areas like the street experiences and the unknown to the general tourist villages - the real people. Often when we are away on holiday, we love the idea of finding the backstreet cafe that the locals go to, rather than the hotspot places. We find we have struck gold and really, that is what this book is - a strike of gold.
