Theme

Traditional, yet for good reason…this book is a beautiful remembrance of skills and patterns which may and do get lost in years. This book is about adornment, touching your everyday with decoration, taking care about your belongings. The stitch projects are inspired by the Mediterranean and from my own reading of this book, I can visualise a little lady outside a white washed greek house, with her needlework - looking just like the outcomes in this book.

The author

I enjoyed the beginning notes in this book by the author on how they had travelled to this books publishing. (Pages 4-6) She touches on the comfort found in Textiles and how that can relate to our creative practice. The author herself focuses on historic textiles as her practice. She opened Avlea Folk Embroidery in 2017.

What we will learn

Projects surround making all sorts of practical objects, all finished with these beautiful patterns. Think children’s dresses, cushions, wall hanging, bags, tableware….

All the stages are covered as well as a design library and finishing touches section.

What I would say, is that on first glance the patterns may look complex, yet when considered in the design library format, I feel like I can work on one tiny bit at a time - no fast development is required. This is about the richness of slow embroidery and needlework - valuing the outcome because it takes time to make and that takes someone who really wants to make it.
