Narrative Batik
Learn the basics of drawing with wax onto a mix of surfaces, including both fabric and paper.
During this session, you will be guided through the process of applying hot wax taken from a specialised wax carrier using a drawing tool. The wax can be used on many surfaces, and it can be used to make beautiful patterns as well as images. You may wish to pre-plan any patterns or shapes you wish to play with or even use a basic simple image on your phone.
Do not feel intimidated by the word ‘draw’, this term when used with Batik is simply a reference to mark making – this is a fun playful activity, suited to any level of artistic experience.
Once the wax has dried, you can use a selection of light paints to cover the area. If your piece dries in time, we can then go on to take the wax out. If not, instruction will be given to provide you with the skills to do this part in your own time.
All tools and materials will be provided, however do feel free to bring along any papers or fabrics which you feel drawn to using. You may also wish to bring an image reference as a guide to use as inspiration - this class is weighted towards creating personal pieces, so do feel free to bring along images to work from or anything which inspired you taken from your own story.
