Schiffer Publishing
Classed as a celebration of America, travel in paper reading form to Virginia to understand the quilts and culture of the place and setting. With quilt examples by many an artist and in partnership with Virgina Quilt Museums mission to preserve heritage….quilt history in pictures. This is actively timed for the 250th year of America - thus the 250 quilts explored within the book.
Who is this books readership?
Those who have what I would call a deeper love and understanding of this niche. It’s got a mix of classic and more artistic examples of this art, so expect the unexpected as well as the usual. The connection to this place is another requirement. Those who live locally will feel a connection, a sense of place and pride.
Written by who?
A mix, so the two authors and support from the museum itself.
What I took from this book
I had less of a connection with it than other publications, simply down to distance and the unknown; a lack of experience. I cannot identify with the themes, yet some become universal historical issues - so I can appreciate, with the artists lens. I loved the text below each image, which educates us in context, history - more than a textile art book. Let’s take ‘In Defence of Books, Libraries and Librarians’. A quilt is illustrated as created by Anne Aubry. It is designed as a nod to the original libraries and shows appreciation of both history and those who support this book led tradition. In each brief paragraph which sits at the bottom of each page, we learn so much in a pithy readable format - this is a clever element to the writing of this book - accessible for all.
