Applique The Sew Quirky Way
Applique The Sew Quirky Way: Fresh designs for quick and easy
Mandy Murray
David & Charles
Within this title, you are set to learn quick and easy ways to make animal based appliqué designs. Let’s learn a little about what makes this ‘quirky’.
About the author
Mandy Murray is well known as the face behind her brand ‘sew quirky’. Applique is her practice, with decorative edges as a key feature. This book is a reflection of her daily life, the patterns and projects she creates. She is based in Australia.
First up, what is the sew quirky way?
The book’s designs are said to be channeled at giving us a ‘huge smile’. They are so pattern heavy, colourful and bright, they scream cheer up without a voice. Have a look at her website, you will see how bouncy and in your face it is. It is like the adult version of a child waking you up on a morning - it’s loud and proud and all singing. Its marmite, love it or move away - you cannot help but see her enthusiasm pervade through.
The projects are all animal inspired
So you better hope you are an animal lover, or at least have appreciation for their funny natures.
To get the basics out of the way, there are twelve projects in this book. From a jacket, to a wall-hanging, to a more usual canvas. All have their own ‘quirky’ name - ‘Rad & Fab’, ‘Koala Kool’, you get the idea.
For some of the projects, you will be taught how to make the whole item, including the appliqué design. In other cases the only thing made will be the appliqué onto the pre-made object, such as the denim jacket on page seventy-six.
What else is included?
I thought the advice and the way it has been narrated was a real strength for this book. Lots of separate sections before the projects which explain machine appliqué methods, decorative stitching and the varieties on offer, tools and materials (cork? That was a new one for me!) The different types of appliqué, the tension on the machine….it is all there before the projects begin on page thirty-four.
What’s the back flap about?
Inside the cover, you will find pattern pieces, all ready for your use. So even if appliqué is new to you, the hand feeds us all, no matter the level worries.
Really then…
It is up to you - can you get your mindset to cope with all this happiness?
